in Safe 6

New and Improved “Safe 6”

Safe 6” was originally conceived eight years ago. It went through many changes before I settled on the 6 Safely Working Skills officially published in 2014:

  •      Recognize
  •      Prepare
  •      Inspect
  •      Control
  •      Operate
  •      Guard

Those descriptors have worked well over the years.  However, the label “Operate” has always been a little awkward.  It just wasn’t the best choice for the purpose of Safe 6.  But I never could identify a better term. It’s been working in my subconscious until a few days ago when the best choice popped into my brain.  It was an epiphany – long overdue.

The label “Operate” is being replaced with “Engage.”  The word “Engage” says so much and better reflects the approach and philosophy of The Safely Working Project.

While the original Safe 6 is found throughout our publications, I believe that the change is worth making. I will be preparing a new edition of my book “Safely Working from the Ground Up” in the coming months.  I will also be updating other publications as I can.

In the meantime, here is the revised Safe 6:

  • Recognize all the dangers – Know the task
  • Prepare the workspace – Get ready
  • Inspect the equipment – Eliminate the unexpected
  • Control conditions and remove dangers – Make it safe
  • Engage and execute skillfully – Use sensible care
  • Guard against mishaps – Keep your eye on the ball

The Safely Working Project is focused wholly on employees and their health and well-being in the workplace.  The Project promotes useful guidance that does not depend on a safety professional or staff to facilitate in the workplace.

The Safely Working Project envisions a path to workplace safety that is driven by employees and supervisors.  This is fundamentally different from the traditional Safety Program where an EHS Professional manages workplace safety.  So, instead of top down safety, Safely Working endeavors to succeed from the ground up. “We’re turning safety upside down.”
